Suspending a trade licence (přerušení živnosti) is a way to put your business on hold temporarily without losing it. The licence does not cease to exist — it simply shows as "suspended" in the register, and you can return to it at any time. It suits any kind of break: parental leave, a long trip, trying out an employed job, a seasonal lull, or simply a spell with no orders.

The most common question is not "how do I report it" but "what about the contributions". There is no single answer — social and health insurance behave differently during a suspension, and health insurance in particular has a catch. This overview shows how to pause the licence, what happens to the payments and how suspension differs from outright cancellation. The figures are based on the rules in force in 2026.

How to pause the licence

You report the suspension to the trade licensing office (živnostenský úřad) — at any such office, via a data box, or online through rzp.gov.cz, using a change form (the single registration form). Reporting is free of charge. With that one form you also inform the tax office, the social security administration and your health insurer at once, so you do not have to visit each authority separately.

The law does not limit how long a suspension may last — you can pause the activity for a month or for several years. In the notice you state the date until which you are suspending the licence; before it expires you can resume the business, extend the suspension, or cancel the licence altogether. The suspension takes effect on the day the notice is delivered, or on a later date you specify. If you want to start again sooner, you simply report the resumption.

If you do not inform an authority through the single form, separate deadlines apply: notify the social security administration and your health insurer within 8 days, and the tax office within 15 days.

Social insurance: the advances stop

Social (pension) insurance is the most straightforward part of a suspension. From the month following the one in which you notify the social security administration, you stop paying advances — and for months in which the activity did not run even in part, no premium is due at all. For a main activity, where the minimum advance in 2026 is CZK 5,720 a month, that is a noticeable saving.

Do not forget one duty, though: even for a year in which you were in business for only part of it, after the year ends you file an income and expense statement (přehled). It reconciles the actual premium for the months worked against the advances paid — any overpayment is refunded, any shortfall you pay. How much the minimum contributions come to and how they are calculated is covered in the article on minimum contributions for the self-employed.

Health insurance cannot be switched off

This is where the biggest misunderstanding arises. While you simply stop paying social insurance during a suspension, you must always be covered by health insurance — participation in the public health system is not optional. Suspending the licence merely means you stop paying as a self-employed person, which raises the question of who pays the premium next.

If you also work in a job, or the state pays your premium (parental leave, a pension, studies up to age 26, or registration with the labour office), you are covered and pay nothing extra. If, however, you have no such reason, you become a person without taxable income and pay the premium yourself — in 2026 that is CZK 3,024 a month (13.5 % of the minimum wage of CZK 22,400). Example: someone who suspends their licence and takes no other job pays over CZK 18,000 in health insurance over six months, even though they are not doing business. A practical solution is often to register with the labour office — the state then pays the premium, and you may also qualify for unemployment support.

Tax and the part-year

Suspending mid-year does not mean the tax return goes away. For the part of the year in which you were in business you file a return as usual, settling income and expenses including receivables, payables and stock as at the date of suspension. If you have been paying tax advances, after the suspension you can ask the tax office to reduce or cancel them, so that you are not paying advances on income that no longer flows. Details on the deadlines are set out in the piece on the tax return and its deadlines.

Suspension, or rather cancellation?

Suspension and cancellation are often confused, yet they are two different things. With a suspension the licence remains and you return to business with a single notice — no new set-up, fees or paperwork. With a cancellation the trade licence ceases to exist; if you later want to do business again, you have to go through the whole process from scratch. Suspension is therefore the right choice when the break is temporary or uncertain; cancellation when you have finished for good. The differences and the procedure for a definitive end are described in the article on closing a trade licence or an s.r.o.

If you are unsure what to do about the statements, advances and health insurance during a suspension, the accounting firm Wellbens can reliably advise and handle it all for you.

Conclusion

Suspending a trade licence is a simple, free step — you report it with a single form and the licence stays in place. Social insurance advances stop from the very next month, but health insurance must always be dealt with: either through a job or the state, or as a person without taxable income at CZK 3,024 a month. Anyone who thinks ahead about health cover and the part-year tax return can pause their business with no unpleasant surprises — and when the time comes, return to it with a single notice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay social insurance while my trade licence is suspended?

No. From the month following the one in which you notify the social security administration, you stop paying social insurance advances, and no premium is due for months in which the activity did not run. After the year ends you still file an income and expense statement, which reconciles the advances paid for the months you worked. Any overpayment is refunded.

What happens to health insurance during a suspension?

You must always be covered by health insurance. If you also work, or the state pays for you (parental leave, a pension, studies, the labour office), you pay nothing extra. Otherwise you become a person without taxable income and pay the premium yourself — CZK 3,024 a month in 2026. Registering with the labour office, where the state pays the premium, is often advantageous.

What is the difference between suspending and cancelling a trade licence?

With a suspension the trade licence remains and you return to business with a single notice, without setting up anew. With a cancellation the licence ceases to exist and, to return to business, you must go through the whole process again. Suspension suits a temporary or uncertain break, cancellation a definitive end. Both suspension and cancellation are reported to the trade licensing office free of charge.
